Lorraine Johnston, an employee of Scotland based Halcrow, (www.halcrow.com) is working hard to actively raise funds for New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity before she visits New Orleans this Thanksgiving. Johnston conceived this fundraising initiative while planning a trip to New Orleans to visit friends. Having traveled to New Orleans many times over the years, Johnston has grown to love the culture, people, cuisine, and music of New Orleans. Almost three years after Hurricane Katrina flooded 80% of the city, homes and businesses still sit abandoned and blighted.
Wanting to show her support for the city's recovery, Johnston plans to host fundraising events, solicit donations from fellow Scots, friends, and colleagues from around the globe to raise as much money as possible before arriving in New Orleans. Once here, Johnston will meet with Habitat staff and announce the total donation amount on behalf of all contributors. Habitat for Humanity has been building affordable homes with low-income families still struggling to find a permanent place to raise thier families. Since the hurricane, over 100 new homes have been constructed and another 100 are underway, making Habitat the largest homebuilder in the city.
